Fast Company®'s newest line of armor protectors are made by the German armor company SAS-TEC and employs an "intelligent" foam to provide the best possible impact protection.
The black CE approved intelligent foam used in SAS-TEC armor functions progressively by adapting it's level of impact absorption proportionally to the force of the impact. Due to the entire foam construction of the armor, the wearer is not limited in their range of movement as much as with hard shell armor. At the same time the foam is of a lighter weight by volume than that of hard shell armor and has no hard edges. SaS-Tec armor also has a built-in memory effect that allows it to return to its original shape after a deformation. Meaning that its possible to reuse this armor after an impact. The foam armor can also be hand washed, since its level of water absorption is under 1%.
Most of the unique features of this armor are due to its closed cell construction. The closed cell design allows for the progressive impact absorption due to the air trapped within the armor. A slow loading of pressure on the foam allows for it to feel soft and pliable as the air has time to move, while a severe impact will cause the armor to become more resilient. The closed cell construction also is what allows the armor to be washable, by resisting the absorption of water.
The armor is constructed from polyurethane foam that has been molded into ergonomic shapes that allow for the best possible level of coverage and protection.
The SAS-TEC knee armor attaches by Velcro® to the DuPont™ KEVLAR® fiber lining within the Draggin'® Jeans or Draggin'® Liners to provide a customizable fit. Knee protectors are CE approved Level 2.
Let me start first by saying I purchased these to install onto a different brand of clothing. This particular brand had reviews indicating the armor pockets were far too low on the leg. I was able to alter the velcro and make these useable . The material in these pads is great and I will be purchasing a set of the correct pants from Draggin as well as a jacket as I think the styling is awesome. In addition, these are so cushioning I will be installing a set on some work pants to install a hardwood floor. I think these will be much better than regular knee pads for labor as I can install them with velcro to the pants instead of having a tight strap behind my knee. Unknown on 28th Sep 2016
I wear the SAS-TEC knee and hip armor between the kevlar Draggin' Liners and a regular pair of Levi 501's. The armor comes with a couple of adhesive backed velcro hook strips to attach it to the kevlar liner. I wanted to add more velcro to help keep it in place, so I added two additional long strips. The knee armor is comfortable and not visible when I'm riding. I'll wear it for short distances while walking, but slide them out the end of my pant legs, if I'm going to be walking for a while. Easy on and off with my boots on. Unknown on 9th Apr 2015
