Fast Company®'s newest line of armor protectors are made by the German armor company SAS-TEC and employs an "intelligent" foam to provide the best possible impact protection.
The black CE approved intelligent foam used in SAS-TEC armor functions progressively by adapting it's level of impact absorption proportionally to the force of the impact. Due to the entire foam construction of the armor, the wearer is not limited in their range of movement as much as with hard shell armor. At the same time the foam is of a lighter weight by volume than that of hard shell armor and has no hard edges. SaS-Tec armor also has a built-in memory effect that allows it to return to its original shape after a deformation. Meaning that its possible to reuse this armor after an impact. The foam armor can also be hand washed, since its level of water absorption is under 1%.
Most of the unique features of this armor are due to its closed cell construction. The closed cell design allows for the progressive impact absorption due to the air trapped within the armor. A slow loading of pressure on the foam allows for it to feel soft and pliable as the air has time to move, while a severe impact will cause the armor to become more resilient. The closed cell construction also is what allows the armor to be washable, by resisting the absorption of water.
The armor is constructed from polyurethane foam that has been molded into ergonomic shapes that allow for the best possible level of coverage and protection.
The SAS-TEC shirt kit with back armor attaches by Velcro® to the Kevlar® lining within the Draggin'® Shirt to provide a customizable fit.
The Shirt Kit 2 consists of 2 shoulder, 2 elbow and back protectors (all CE approved Level 2).
I took a spill going 45-50 MPH, and this jacket kit saved my elbows, shoulders, and back. The impact was pretty significant, but once I stopped, I didn't even have bruises where this armor was protecting me.
From a comfort standpoint, I really like SAS-tec. It's not bulky; it's not too stiff; in fact, for the value it provides, I don't know anything else that could do better. Overall, I'm very happy with it, and recommend it for any motorcyclist. Brad on 8th Dec 2015
